Star of the Show: Perfect Holiday Sweater

Are you still looking for that perfect outfit to wear for Christmas? Or even New Years Eve? Well time is running out but you can still snag this fun sweater if you find it in store!

This seems like the perfect sweater for a much more casual NYE look, but I really like it for Christmas because it isn’t your typical over the top green or red sweater. You can be comfy and super cute in this. I decided to take this look for a total 90’s feel by adding a denim skirt, tights and booties. Super easy to pull off and extremely comfortable. And topped it off with my newest obsession, this Lack of Color hat. Which I may be wearing to everything.

Simple. Festive. Stylish.

Holiday Style: Casual and Funky

Just because the holiday season is here, doesn’t mean you have to dress head to toe frilly, in lace or sequins or even in the holidays “it” colors, red and green. Let’s face it, I’m just not in to dressing frilly anymore. So for me, the old holiday outfit ideas I used to have, are out the window. Dressing for myself is the number one priority and this year I made it a goal to do that.

Christmas bells are ringing and I’m over here still dressing in black, denim and stripes. But hey, that’s me. So for this holiday look I pulled together my new favorite look to show you how easy it is to dress for a casual holiday function without looking like a Christmas tree and being true to yourself.

If you are new around here, I have an addiction with stripes. It’s probably because I was always told women of size shouldn’t wear them and I love to break social rules. Besides the point. So I have paired this silky-ish blouse with a plunging neckline, boxy shape and my favorite print with my new favorite pants. These denim leggings I snagged from Lysse on Black Friday are my newest obsession. The perfect fit, slimming affect, pipping along the leg and the fun zipper detail all make me squeal with excitement when I wear them. A dressed up casual look but all while being oh so comfy and stylish. To make the outfit feel more festive I paired it with these adorable pom pom shoes that bring just the right amount of festive cheer to this outfit without going over the top. I would wear this during the non-holiday season, which is a point I make when I am shopping for pieces for my wardrobe. Topped it off with an edgy black necklace and a furry clutch. And a red lip takes your outfit to another holiday level right now. I love a red lip on any day, but right now, you just can’t miss it!

Perfect for any holiday event thrown your way or even just meeting up with friends.

I hope all of you are having a wonderful holiday season so far! I did just want to remind you that I am doing #instamas on Instagram where I am documenting parts of my life every day! Feel free to join in on the fun.

Cozy, Warm Layers + Halloween Traditions

Fall I love you. Layering I love you. Car rides on the Blue Ridge Parkway to peep leaves, I love you. Rolling fog I love you. Scarf season I love you. Chilly temperatures I love you.

I feel like I’m always running around trying to squeeze in as much of seasonal activities that I can.  Lately I’ve been trying to see as much of the autumnal foilage, cross off lists from my Fall bucket list and see as many misty, foggy mornings as possible. But when running around I just can’t fathom getting dressed up for chasing leaves and walking around in the clouds.  So I go for my trusty favorites.

If I’m going to be doing any type of hiking of course I dress accordingly and will wear leggings, etc. But when I’m not going on a lengthy hike I go with my trusty skinny jeans and a common pullover. I actually acquire a few of these pullovers every season. I wear these fore everything from work, to adventures, to lounge wear. For this particular day, I knew I needed to run a few errands afterwards and was also having a lunch date so I threw on my favorite leather jacket I purchased from Nordstrom a few years ago and a scarf to keep my neck warm. I’m loving all the different earthy colors, textures and layers I have going on in this outfit. And though it may not look the warmest, it kept me warm in the below 50 degree weather.

Stay tuned to next week because I will actually share in more detail how I love styling basic pullovers for every day wear so it doesn’t look like you haven’t changed from pajamas all day.

HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS

Like most holidays, we all have our own traditions. Some times they change, some times we don’t stick to them and some times we are trying to find something new to add to your traditions. So I thought I would share my old and newer traditions.

When I was younger we always had typical family traditions. My family was big in to Halloween. We always went to my grandparent’s house where we had some kind of homemade soup. Oyster stew, chicken stew, chili or chicken noodle soup. No matter which one it was always soup. We always went trick or treating in the same neighborhood and always ended the night with scary movies. As I got older, the soup remained a constant but the activities changed, like parties and haunted houses.

As I’ve gotten older, live on my own and start my own traditions, I have tried to incorporate some old things and some new. Every single year I no longer do the trick-or-treating but instead am the lady who passes out candy and comments on each costume. All while each child asks about my cat and some kids have even just walked in to my apartment. It’s interesting to say the least. It never fails, I always try to make a soup I like because honestly I’m not the hugest soup fan (even though I had it every Halloween, still doesn’t mean it was my favorite). So I have a few recipes for soups (love this one) I actually like or I try to make a crock pot meal (Winter staple in my house) or a casserole of some kind (easiest one I have ever made). Some thing easy but warm and hearty. After the trick-or-treating is over, I make a wicked cocktail or have a pumpkin beer and put on a horror film. But no Halloween night is ever over without watching Hocus Pocus. Since moving to the mountains I have actually stayed up extremely late on Halloween to wait for the first snowfall of the season, it has happened a few times since moving here.

Let me know what your traditions are in the comments!

White Jeans After Labor Day

It’s an age old fashion rule that we are “supposed” to follow. No white after Labor Day. But I’m here for breaking rules. And I’m here to help you break that rule.

White denim has become more and more popular the past two Spring and Summer seasons. The “IT” denim if we will. But now that you have invested in some good pairs of white denim how are you going to transform these jeans in to the colder months? It’s actually pretty simple.

To transform your white denim to Fall and Winter all you have to do is add darker colors or neutrals. Pretty simple. In order for white denim to work, I would try adding darker heavy tops like chunky sweaters, oversized cardigans, moto jackets or even utility jackets or vests. I paired mine with a very neutral top and a long line utility vest this past weekend when it was still a little warm in the afternoons. There is no way I would have been able to wear this #ootd this week, but I have also paired a chunky rust colored sweater with these exact jeans HERE.

For you to be able to rock the white denim now I would avoid lighter colors unless paired with something darker to avoid looking like a Spring chicken. I would avoid light colored sweaters. Save those light greys, blush pinks, oatmeals and cream colored sweaters for your regular wash of denim.

So not only is it a little intimidating to wear white denim in the Fall and Winter months but it can also be an extreme challenge to find the perfect white denim. And I’ll just tell you it’s going to take hard work and lots and lots of trying on. And denim shopping is like bathing suit shopping. Denim will fit each person differently. So here are four options for white denim investments that work for me, but they also work for a lot of size ranges and women:

  • Good American White Denim– I got to try these on at an event while on vacation and fell in love. These are amazing and I can’t believe I’m saying that about a Kardashian product. These are investment pieces (only reason they didn’t come home with me that day) and carry a hefty price tag. Great thing is there is a full size range!
  • Levis– Did you know Levis carries a full size range in denim as well? Levis is a love it or hate it pair of denim. But I like their fit.
  • Nest– My white pair of denim is from Nest Boutique + DIY Studio in Asheville. They have a full size range and these jeans are from their plus collection.
  • Old Navy – I think Old Navy is a love or hate denim as well. But I love it for an affordable option. And they have a few great white denim options in a full size range!

The Most Basic Fall Outfit

It finally felt like Fall in Asheville this weekend. About time mother nature acted like the month we are in. So I took full advantage of the dip in temperatures to dress like the basic Fall loving female I like to think I am. But really I’m no where close to being basic. But I love a good flannel and white converse. So maybe that does make me basic.

The easiest thing to add to your outfit, no matter your budget or style that screams Fall is a Flannel. It literally is so versatile with any style. Whether extremely feminine, chic, a little hipster, a little basic or a little edgy; it works in your Fall wardrobe.  It works in so many outfit options too. Dress it up or dress it down as I did this Sunday. And personally I think everyone should have some, yes plural. You really can not have too many. Flannel shirts, flannel scarves, flannel shirts, heck flannel pants!

Ok ok! I may be going overboard with my love for flannel but it really is that great versatile piece that works season after season.

This past weekend I headed out for an annual Blue Ridge Parkway Fall adventure. It happens every year, because I live in Asheville. DUH! This year in one day I hit up Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain, Banner Elk, Linville Falls and Littel Switzerland. Yes all in one day. And the leaf lookers were out in full force even though there wasn’t a ton of foilage. But I did want to dress not only comfortable but very Fallish. So I threw on some jeans and t-shirt because adventuring y’all. Added some converse, a flannel and my new favorite ballcap. Perfect for a day of exploring. But also perfect for casual days, bonfires or pumpkin shenanigans. I mean you could also wear something similar and go as an off duty lumberjack for Halloween.

Shopping Tip!!! Old Navy has the best and most affordable flannel options. Tons of cuts, styles and prints making it easy to stock up for your Fall wardrobe.

A Real Statement Dress

Dress // Necklace (custom design) // Shoes

My style is ever changing, though consistent. I like to keep with blacks and neutrals but the cuts and prints I am attracted to are changing. I am not the biggest fan of the embroidery trend that is insanely popular, nor am I generally attracted to trendy pieces; but here I am in a dress with some embroidery on it. But the bodice, sleeves and bottom of this dress is what made me put this in my shopping cart.

I previously would have never put on anything that cut as deep as this dress or with two slits that go way above my knees in the front. And it’s not like I am not self confident and recently just discovered it. It’s more like I want to try something I would never do and if that means wearing a dress that doesn’t require a bra, I’m all in. But the winning factor of this dress is the fun details, it is comfortable and the dress was extremely affordable.

So this dress is not your going to the grocery store dress but a  dramatic statement piece perfect for date night, parties, weddings or even upcoming holiday events.

How to Style That Summer Dress: What I Wore To Chattanooga

Dress // Cardigan // Sandals

This weather is seriously crazy y’all. One minute it’s really chilly all day and the next you get the mountain chill in the morning and evening but that late Summer heat during the day. Dressing for those days can be a bit complicated. But I love layers the most, so I’m trying different layers and putting them to the test.

I packed this little wrap dress for a weekend getaway for Chattanooga because I wanted to look pulled together and chic for a day at an art museum but comfortable and cool. But it was going to be chilly in the morning and generally art museums always have their AC cranked to the max. So this edgy little dress was the perfect thing to pair with a long cocoon shaped pumpkin colored cardigan I recently got. And the pairing was amazing. I popped on some of the most comfortable and funky sandals and a little dainty choker and I felt chic but yet comfortable for a day of walking.

To take a dress from the Summer to Fall all you have to do is add a fun cardigan to change the entire look of the outfit. Try different textures, lengths and colors for a perfect Fall outfit.

I just went to Chattanooga for the weekend and stayed at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. An old train station turned hotel was one of the most amazing stays ever. The room I stayed in was like a traditional hotel room, but the grounds were amazing. They even have train cars you can sleep in over night. An amazing spot with some equally creepy “The Shining” vibes. I went to see one of my favorite artists and fell in love with the city and the art museum. I have a feeling I will be going back very very soon.

Farewell To Summer But Not This Dress

I just got back from a much needed vacation in one of my favorite spots! (I’ll be haring a travel diary on Wednesday about where I went and what I did if you don’t follow me on Instagram.)

But I packed basics for this trip, nothing special because my only real plan was to truly relax on the beach for the majority of the time. I did pack this black dress that makes me feel like Adele and this little bomber both from Nest Boutique and DIY studio, and they were the perfect pairing for some waterfront dining one night at a swanky little place. And so easy to wear. Which is the key for vacation.

Now that Summer is unofficially over, I came back to Asheville and it really felt like Fall y’all; I am starting to put away my shorts, tanks and off the shoulder tops. But this dress is not going away yet. Neither is this bomber despite the bright colors. This dress will be great with tights and heels plus a fur coat for chillier days and it’s the perfect little dress for Holiday get togethers and festive holiday outings. Plus I also think this dress would be perfect for a few Halloween costumes I have up my sleeves (because store bought costumes are just gross).

So I challenge you while you are packing away your Spring/Summer goodies to see what will carry itself in to the colder months and holiday season. Not only is it fun to try to think of new ways to style something but your wallet will really thank you.

I hope you all had a great unofficial end to Summer and now the basic bia inside of me is ready to live for the Fall fashion, weather and activities. Make sure you are following along to stay up to date.

Seasons Are Changing

It’s still Summer until the 22nd of September and I am currently at the beach for a little late Summer getaway, but I can’t help but to think; the most wonderful and my favorite time of year is approaching. I hear people talking about how they hate Fall/Winter all the time, but I love it. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good beach vacation and I am a water baby at heart whether it be lakes, rivers or the sea; I also love the longer amount of light and the fact that the fireflies come out. But Fall/Winter has my heart.

In the middle of the endless Summer heat, I always think I’ll never be able to wrap up in sweaters and scarfs and drink a latte without dying of heat exhaustion; but like clockwork the seasons always seem to change.

There’s something about waking up before the sun to catch a glimpse of the chilly fog lifting over the mountains. Wrapping up in blankets, lighting a candle and feeling like the warmest thing around you. And feeling at home. There’s something about seeing all the trees go through a colorful change, knowing they will be whole again after the change.

I love all the closeness that Fall/Winter brings. Coffee dates with your friends in matching basic warmness. Breaking out the flannels. Movie nights. More at home dinner cooking. Being close to those you really care about while the chilly air whips around you.

I love the childlike activities that take place. Making you feel young and alive. Apple Orchards. The fair. Camping. Carving pumpkins.

Another thing that makes Fall/Winter the absolute best: The Holidays! It stresses some out; some hate it because they work retail. I love it though. I mean we have three holidays based around delicious food and being cozy. Count me in.

And don’t even get me started on the “s” word everyone hates. Yes! I love the snow. It’s so magical and unaltered and innocent. It is what you make out of it. And I love the childlike wonder that it brings out in so many people.

Traveling #OOTD

There is still time to get some last minute Summer traveling in, but I personally prefer to travel in the Fall. And it’s probably because I live in a tourist town where everyone flocks to it during the Fall time. Those beautiful leaves y’all! So I’m off to the beach for a week, vacay started Saturday and I have several other travel plans for the Fall (and escaping all those leaf lookers). And the weather is cooling off and let’s be real; I like to have the car feeling like Antarctica when I’m traveling even if I need to wrap up in something cozy due to it. So this look is perfect from going from somewhere chillier (or even traveling to somewhere chillier) to somewhere warmer. And it’s perfect for going from the car ride or flight to going straight to getting your vacation on.

I’ve said it before and million times over, but a t-shirt dress is the answer to all your styling problems. It’s simple, versatile and most of the times you can find them for extremely affordable prices. Plus it can carry you from season to season, or from somewhere chillier to warmer. I love this striped one I got at Target in the early Spring. It’s striped (duh), the perfect weight, comfy as all get out and can be worn super casual or dressed up. Plus it doesn’t get wrinkled as easy even after being in the car (or plane) for hours.

I paired it with a light weight cardigan for temperature changes and to just be comfy in the car. Plus if I get to hot, this cardigan will make a great pillow. Versatile pieces guys! With comfort being key, I paired this with some Converse shoes. It has a whole beachy casual vibe to it, but when I get to the island, if I need to make a quick change I can easily throw on some sandals and be ready to go.

Let’s not forget the big bag. Easy to carry all the important things like a phone charger, reading material, road trip snacks and anything I may want to change in to if I’m not heading to the villa first.

Ready to go! Make sure you all are following along on Instagram as I will really be documenting this much anticipated and much needed vacation.
