The Show I Didn’t Expect To Binge Watch Or Be So Emotional Over

Image VIA

I’m not one to tell y’all what I’m binge watching because generally it’s embarrassing or I’ve gotten better since I’m busy now to watch an episode at a time, ya know like people normally would. And you probably honestly don’t care. But the show I recently binge watched, was one I wasn’t expecting or expected to have real emotions during. But I did and I’m still heart broken over it; so since it is that good I just had to tell y’all about it.

I had not heard of 13 Reasons Why (I had no idea it was a book or created by Selena Gomez). I even ignored the preview on Netflix earlier in the month; I simply passed it off as another teen drama. But then I noticed a friend whom is a teacher talking about it, so thought I would put it on as background noise for making dinner. I was making a chicken bake, so nothing was going to burn, but I didn’t want to keep missing the parts when I got up to do laundry and other nightly chores. After dinner, I had to restart the show and I was drawn in. Needless to say I was up until about 3am on Monday morning watching because I just had to know what happened next. I later finished the Netflix original on Thursday, and lately I haven’t been binge watching anything with my hectic schedule.

Without giving away what happens, the trailer even tells you this much; the concept is Hannah has taken her life and left tapes to explain why and the show focus around Clay, Hannah’s crush/love, listening. Even though it’s high school based, the reason I was so drawn in is we have all either been Hannah or known a Hannah. Also the characters are all familiar; the popular crowd, the loner, the kid who might do a school shooting, the friendly crowd, the shy kid, the kid with no money and the kid with all the money who gets away with everything. All of them trying to find their way and themselves through the harsh reality of life.

But the show’s creators and writers did not leave any stone unturned. The show talks about things that high schoolers and young adults (even adults) face. Bullying, sexual assault, depression, rape, alcoholism and the list goes on. They take it head on, not something that is pushed under the rug. It’s raw and real. It honestly feels like the most realistic thing I’ve watched in a really long time.

I as a 28 year adult, cried. I cried more times than I would like to actually admit. The scene that got me the most was the school dance scene. A perfect moment in time. Like we have all had before. A moment that captures that awkward yet thrilling moment of young or fresh love. A moment we never think would be a memory due to a tragic fate.

When Clay hears is own tape, I balled. Like a baby. Sometimes you can love someone so much but still not be able to help them the way they need you too. Or you may not even know they needed help, because on the outside they were holding it together so well, or maybe even semi well. This hit home a little too much with a bunch of personal stuff going on.

The graphic scene of the actual suicide makes you really think. What could I do a little more to make sure someone feels that they have no other choice. No one to help them. No one to run to. No one to comfort them. I have suffered with depression since the age of the characters in the show. I have gotten to that point. But then I always had someone bring me back. And we all need that from time to time.

A show to make you think. A show to make you feel emotions. A show to make you love and compassionate. A show to make you think about those around you. A show to make you live life to fullest. A show to make you thankful. A show to make you think about the things you say and do. A show to make you aware you effect others. A show to make you tell people you love, that you love them. A show to make you aware, the world is rough and every single one of us has to encounter it’s harshness.

I’ve always been a fan of The Gilmore Girls. I grew up on that show. So saying I’m excited about the new 4 part season coming to Netflix later this Fall is an understatement.

I always wanted to find a partner like Luke Danes. I wanted a friend like Lorelai. I wanted to be like Rory. I wanted to live in a place like Stars Hallow. I wanted a love like Luke and Lorelai’s. It was a show that felt more real than anything else I was watching, except maybe the Wonder Years.

This past week of the 16th anniversary of the airing date, I got to live these dreams. Netflix chose 250 coffee shops to participate in transforming in to Luke’s Diner for the day. And luckily Asheville was on that list.

Asheville already feels like Stars Hallow in some aspects, but much larger. It’s cozy and homey, has four seasons that we go all out for and there are inns that put the Independence Inn/Dragonfly Inn to shame. I have a place that is essentially my Luke’s (5 Points). But last week, there really was a Luke’s.

Double D’s downtown transformed in to the cynical, laid back, town center coffee shop for the morning. There was a lot of plaid and baseball caps, a lot of people my age whom I can only guess have a special connection with The Gilmore Girls as I do and pipping hot coffee.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many smiles at 8:00 in the morning at a coffee shop. No one complaining about the line. Everyone saying “coffee, coffee, coffee“. Everyone so happy that this was actually happening. It actually felt like Stars Hallow.

I can’t thank Netflix and Double D’s enough for this experience. It took me back to my childhood, on a couch with my mom watching this show. I finally had my Stars Hallow experience and it was pretty great.

If you haven’t ever watched Gilmore Girls (which I highly suggest) you can catch all the seasons on Netflix, to watch for the first time or binge watch and the new series will begin only on Netflix this Black Friday.

Monday Morning Chit Chat

Monday Morning Chit Chat

I’ve been in a real blogging slump lately, hence the picture from my Valentine’s Day weekend. I am feeling a little love/hate relationship with my closet right now, along with a lot of other things. So I thought today I would just sharing with you some things I’m loving and not loving lately.

I’m in my final semester of college and things are pretty tough, I’m averaging about 2 hours of sleep a night (except on Sunday I slept a normal amount of time) so to prevent the horrible eye bags I have been loving the Tarte Maracuja C Brightner Eye Treatment. It really helps with making my eyes look awake and void of dark, puffy circles. To help with this and the constant headaches I am now getting I am also using my Rachel Weisberg Lavender Eye Pillow.

If I can I really enjoy getting out of the house to do some computer work for school. My cat is constantly trying to get on the computer with me and there is just too much background noises. So I’m finding new coffee shops in Asheville that are perfect for me. Filo Pastries is a really great choice so far.

Coffee shops are great and generally quiet but sometimes I do need the back ground noise so I have been watching a lot of Netflix here lately. And not all of it is great. “Fuller House” was an extreme let down, the only part that I was actually pleased with was when Uncle Jesse sang Forever. However, if you are looking for a good new series to watch I recommend “Love”, I love how real life it is and how gender roles are almost traded with the two characters. Also the last season of “Breaking Bad” is just as intense as it was the first 3 times it was watched, BITCH.

Speaking of movies, “The Witch” was probably the worst thing I have ever watched. Since I never go to the movies anymore it was extremely disappoint for the money that was spent on it. I’m not sure how it has such high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and was claimed to be the new classic.

Recently I went to Bonefish Grill for dinner and ordered the ceviche, and now I’m really wanting to try to make my own. So of course I’ve been looking on Pinterest.

Can we talk about Leo finally winning as Oscar last night!!!!!

I’m also pretty sure there is a winter storm coming through Asheville later this week, everyone says this is a repeat of what happened during the Blizzard of 93′ so sadly I’m keeping out my winter gear for just a little bit longer.

Spring clothes are starting to fill the shelves. It’s all a little overwhelming because like me, I think my style is once again slowly changing. I keep being drawn to the extremely simple things, things I can get multiple, multiple, multiple uses out of. Things that are easy to style, transition and layer with.

It’s felt like Spring with what I’ve been eating lately. Lots of berries for breakfast and the first cook out of the year was had a week ago. Also Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack is so delicious and had it delivered one night when the schedule was extremely hectic. P.S. Rocky’s mac and cheese poppers and sweet potato casserole is pretty much heaven in a bite.

I’ve been working on a lot of art here lately! Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram because I have sales on art through Pay With Penny!

As of Lately

The weather in Asheville has been rainy, but I’ve tried to make it out to Biltmore as much as possibly to see the Biltmore Blooms this Spring.

As Of Lately

I introduced a four legged friend into my home, Maeve seems to be adjusting pretty well.

As Of Lately

I got to take a hard hat tour of the Asheville Outlets that are due to open on May 1st. It was pretty neat to see the transformation from the old mall.

As Of Lately

Cove Lake Labradoodles had a new litter of puppies on 4-15-15. They are so tiny and adorable right now.

I hate to admit but I will, I’m addicted to Sons of Anarchy. I can’t stop watching it. And with Netflix releasing the final season this month, it’s been about the only thing I actually sit down and watch.

Make sure you are following me on Instagram to see what I’m up to on a daily basis!.

Because I'm Happy

We are all aware of this upbeat Summer tune; “Happy” from Pharrell Williams. It’s such an upbeat song that makes you want to get up and dance, but there is a greater meaning and message behind the song. I recently watched the documentary Happy, due to the recommendation of a Plyler and was blown away by the film. Research shows that 50% of happiness is genetic, 10% is due to circumstances (thought this would have been higher) and the other 40% is what you decide to do with it. The documentary interviews people from all over the world, who don’t have the finest things in life, whom have lost great things but are still extremely happy. This really got me thinking; having all the money in the world, the greatest job or the finest things really don’t bring you happiness. It honestly is in the small things. I’m happy and I don’t have the greatest, most high paying job, live in the finest house in Asheville, or wear name brand clothes from head to toe; but I’m happy! I find happiness in other things now days; the smell of new canvases, the time I get to paint, taking pictures, cooking dinner, watching something I’ve seen before on Netflix, Honey Boo Boo (yes this brings true happiness to me), a good beer shared by the river, a few hours of me time, and going to school. Yes the people around me make me extremely happy (most of the time) but you have to be happy even when someone isn’t around. What makes you happy?.

Relationships: What’s Important

Relationships:What's Important

Last week I watched on a movie on Netflix called “How Does She Do It” starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The movie showed a woman with a perfect life and family slowly come to a downfall because she chose everything else over her family. So my question is what is important to you? In a relationship you have to know that there are times you may have to give up somethings you want to move you forward, but if they don’t move your relationship forward it is best to back down. In the movie Sarah Jessica Parker’s character was a career woman, and in real life many of us want a career, but would we go to the depth of pushing our relationship away or even be on the verge of loosing it to gain a career. A career is great, but if you are sacrificing happiness in your home, more than likely it’s not worth it. Make sure you make time for one another no matter if you live in the same town, same home, or are actually battling a long distance relationship. Making time for the other person shows respect, consideration and shows the value of that person..

Let’s Get Real

stephanie

Soooo, since Friday it has not been above freezing and the weather has been horrible and I haven’t felt so great (that’s why there is not outfit posts), but why not let me tell you some of the random things that I’m really excited about!

1. I now have insurance. Yes this is what older people should get excited about, but when a girls got as many problems as me it will come in handy.

2. I’m beyond excited that The Monuments Men is being made into a movie which is set to be released this Spring. If you haven’t read the book you should. If you love art you should read the book and go watch the movie. Also I haven’t been to the movie theater in years but I will have to make a point to watch this before I can download it because I will not be able to wait that long.

3. I found a new favorite artist! Wayne White has stolen my heart, don’t worry Pollock there’s a small part there for you too. This man is hilarious and so is his art! Watch the documentary called Beauty is Embarrassing on Netflix and even if you aren’t an artist you will enjoy it. Also must I add I kind of need his book “Maybe Now I’ll Get the Respect I So Richly Deserve”. Immediately added to my want list to save for. Here’s my favorite from waynewhiteart.com:

3_ill-smash-this-painting-rd-3

4. Ulta has a great sale right now!

5. Getting artsy again. I need to start doing things I love again and art is my number one love (sorry Andrew). I’m actually going to be making a print to hang on some wall space and create a photo wall.

6. This adorable sweet thang shall become mine:
