DIY HOLIDAY: WALL HANGING

Wall hangings are all the rage right now. Especially if you are in to the bohemian decor. But with options available at Urban Outfitters and Anthropology, they are pricey. And a surprising fact, if you aren’t doing any weaving or macrame these cute pieces of wall art are extremely easy and affordable to make. No class needed for these babes.

You Will Need:

Yarn- can do multiple colors and different textures

Scissors

Wreath Hoops, rods or wood for the hanging device

You can add feathers, beads or wire accents

With all of my materials and coupons from Michaels, I was able to buy enough materials for two wall hangings for $15.00!

You will cute your yarn to desired length and start tying around your hanging device. You can do each piece or do groups of the yarn for a thicker knot. The easiest knot for this wall hanging is a Lark’s Head Knot.

Keep cutting and knotting to create any kind of design you would like. The great thing about the hoop is you can easily move your knotted sections to get the type of design you would like.

Once you get your yarn in the position you like now you can add any feathers, wire or beads to add some extra texture or fun to your piece. At this point you would also want to cut your ends the way you would like. Any way will work or you can leave it messy. Either way you choose it still looks great.

Now you are ready for gifting or hanging it in your space for yourself. Super easy and super affordable. Plus you will get a good relaxing creative hour out of this project. I also have a few more ideas linked on my Pinterest that are great ideas for your wall hanging.

Gift Guide For Experiences Instead of “Things”

We all know someone who literally has everything they need and want. So what do you get those people for a Christmas gift? With a world full of so many things, why not gift experiences. A great option that keeps on giving after Christmas Day and after the newness of a present wears off. Here are the options that I have come up with that would make great experiences!

Admission To Fun Activities

Gift a one-time ticket to any where your recipient loves to visit. Or some where the person may want to visit, but a little out of their price range. Museums, exhibits, the zoo, amusement parks, or local attractions. Or even a certificate for a massage for a day. I know I personally love visiting art exhibits, museums and amusement parks. These places always make for a great day.

 Food Experiences

Gifting cooking lessons isn’t saying that the person you love is a horrible cook. This would be such a fun experience. The ability to try foods you might not otherwise try to cook and learning to appreciate the process of cooking and the experience of eating the meal. I’ve been dying to try some of the classes that Hickory Nut Gap Farm offers. It seems enticing to try something I could never do in my own kitchen. If classes are not available or just perfect for the person you are gifting, try gifting a gift card to a restaurant the person has been wanting to try, their favorite place or something that may be out of their element.

Lessons To Learn Something New

Something you know someone has always wanted to try? Whether it be a new language, an art class or advancing on their hobbies.

Tickets To One Time Events

Think sporting events, concerts, plays, ballet and musicals. I have received tickets for shows, games and the ballet for several different holidays and they have been amazing. I’ve had to wait until the actual events and the excitement has only built. The only downside to this is that you have to choose a date for it, but most tickets you can get in enough advance that someone can plan for this event.

Getaways and Travel

In order to do this you must really know the person you are doing this for. You have to know where they would love to travel to, where they would love to stay and when would be a good time to book the trip. It doesn’t have to be a grand vacation. It could be a weekend getaway or a night away. Sometimes it’s just fun and exciting to get away from home for a while. This past year for my birthday, Andrew gifted me with a trip to Chattanooga. It was only for a night but it was amazing. And totally worth the drive.

Camping Adventure

If someone can handle a night or weekend away without staying in a hotel I highly suggest the gift of camping. To be one with nature, no cell service, to be in silence, sleep under the stars; all amazing things and can do wonder for your health. I have gifted this adventure before and though I got a kink in my neck, had to shower with shoes on and got extremely cold at night, nothing beats bourbon under the stars by a fire. Or how peaceful I felt.

Season Passes To Favorite Places

A gift that lasts for a whole year. A pass to someone’s favorite place or even just an extremely fun place which they can use over and over again for a year! I have annual passes to the Biltmore Estate and think they are well worth the investment. Most places it is cheaper than two visits. You can get them to just about anywhere that requires an admission fee. From the national park services to amusement parks to local area attractions. I have gifted amusement park passes before and were a huge hit. Plus it was a gift that kept on giving all Summer long. I would actually love to get annual passes to Grandfather Mountain!

Hopefully this got you thinking about gift giving in a different way. Go explore fun things that you can give to your loved ones that won’t be shoved in a drawer soon.

Another day, another blogger’s gift guide. However, I wanted to do something a little different. There’s no point in sharing silly things I know none of us will really use or overpriced gift sets that really aren’t worth the money. Or sharing the same things you have seen on every other blog. Gifts you will actually love to give, that your recipient will love or that you would actually love to get. All things you can actually use, most right after opening. From new brands I have discovered and am swooning over to brands I stand by. And something for everyone. Gift Guide: For the Fashionista

Gift Guide: For the Fashionista

Ahhhh! Finally the first gift guide of the season. Shopping for the #fashionista in your life can be hard. She seems like she always looks flawless so you want your gift to be just as great. So I have rounded up my top 9 picks under $75.00 and under that are the perfect gift besides her typical clothing gifts.

  1. Moon & Stars EarringsBaubleBar has some of the best statement pieces for any style! Plus the affordability is perfect for gift giving. I love these earrings and could be styled numerous different ways. Could be edgy, dark or glam! I have officially added these to my Black Friday shopping list 😉
  2. Cosmetic Bag– What girl doesn’t love to see designer leather underneath the Christmas tree, especially a #fashionista? To make a big impact but on a smaller budget, this Coach cosmetic bag is a perfect gift idea. We girls have a ton of stuff in our bags, so it even works for the #fashionista who keeps her make up of the day minimal! I also love picking out a black leather option as it goes with everything.
  3. Quay Sunglasses– Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean the shades get put away with the tank tops! I love Quay sunglasses and most of the shapes are funky yet flattering on most face shapes.
  4. Fashion Illustration– When you are at a loss for what to get your fashionista gal pal or family member because you are afraid you might get something that isn’t her particular style, fashion illustrations are great! Fashion in it’s self is art, so a fashionable piece of art is a great gift! You can find fashion illustrations anywhere online, in a ton of different styles and price ranges. Plus it will look great on her Instagram!
  5. Robe– The best part about a fashionista’s look is the actual process in putting it together. The best part is the creating process in the way she styles everything and creates the look she wants the world to see. Some of the time it’s a lengthy process. Robes make a great gift because the getting ready process is a fun process and she should still feel stylish during the process.
  6. R + CO Outer Space Hair Spray– I have been wanting to try out this product for a really long time and at my recent hair appointment I was finally able too. The entire R+CO line is dreamy but this hairspray is out of this world (no pun intended). It has a great hold without that crunchy, sticky feeling. It also smells amazing. Any girl who fixes her hair on a daily basis needs to try this at least once. It’s a bit pricey for hairspray (but oh so worth it) so if your fashionista may not splurge on an item like this for herself, gift it to her; she will be forever thankful!
  7. Kat Von D Eye Shadow Palette– Kat Von D eyeshadows (any of her make up for that matter) goes on like a dream. Extremely blendable and a perfect starter kit. Great for the pro or someone wanted to expand her make up techniques. Plus the entire Kat Von D beauty line is creulty free and great for sensitive skin! I got this specific palette for my birthday and think it was the best choice I’ve ever made.
  8. Colour Pop Lip Products– Colour Pop has a wide range of lip products for any beauty loving girl. Whether she likes glossy lips or matte lips, Colour Pop has an option. Plus their color selection is out of this world; from nudes, to pretty pinks to the darkest berries and funky colors! Most of their lip products are cruelty free!
  9. Furry Clutch– This Who What Wear Collection collection is #goals! I love it and it’s amazing in both the blush and black color! Perfect present to add a little extra luxe or funk to any fashion girl’s #ootd. Also this is a perfect alternative to a sparkly clutch for NYE!

Gifts For The Grad

Gifts For The Grad

Graduation is right around the corner and it’s time to think about what to purchase for your favorite grad. Cash is always a great option for any grad, but sometimes a useful gift is just as nice. I would be more than happy to receive any of these for a graduation gift myself so I thought I would share what grads would really like!

  1. Gift Cards {Image via}- Gift cards are a great thing to have especially when you are strapped for cash or want something that you necessarily wouldn’t want to spend your money on. When getting gift cards you have to think about the grad. Will they need a new wardrobe for their new job? Will they be driving a lot? Will they be moving in to their first place? You also have to think about the location of the grad. You can purchase a metro card for someone moving or living in the city or a certificate for public transportation. Other great gift cards are spas, clothing/department stores, coffee shops, Amazon (you can enter to win a $50.00 one HERE), gas cards, restaurants, grocery stores or just a regular Visa gift card. You could also get membership cards to gyms or places like Sam’s to alleviate that cost for the Grad for the year.
  2. iPad– The days of lugging around a laptop are over especially if the grad will be on the go or have a busy life after graduation. I would opt for a mini version so it’s easy to fit in a bag. Even if the grad is going to need to be writing up a bunch of stuff and still use a laptop these are great for on the go stuff and great for meetings.
  3. Books– Books are a great personal gift. And there are a ton of options. You can choose something that would fit the grad’s career choice, their passion and interests, an inspirational book or simply a classic. Writing a note in the book is also a huge plus.
  4. Jewelry– Graduating generally means elevating style or simplifying style. I think a great piece of jewelry that can be dressed up or down (essentially an everyday piece) is a great graduation gift. These earrings are from a fair trade, ethical company so providing something that actually gives back makes the gift a little more special. For guys I would opt for a sleek watch.
  5. Business Card Holder– Now is the time when your favorite grad is going to have meetings, promote their selves and need to be in contact with important people. Business cards need to be handy and easy to retrieve on short notice. So that the cards are not tossed all over the bottom of their bag or next to their credit cards, a holder keeps everything in place and convenient. There are a ton of these options out there. I love leather ones and would go for a leather one for a guy.
  6. Quality Bag– The days of spending a bit of money on bags from Target or Forever 21 that tear and peel in a months time need to be over. Your grad is a grown up now and needs to have investment pieces. A good quality leather bag is an investment piece that will last and worth the money. For a grad I would look for classic styles, neutral colors, a spacious bag and one with sturdy straps. Perfect for work, travel and everyday.
  7. Business Cards {image via}– Your grad is or needs to be professional now and have their info handy at any given time. So business cards are a great gift. Most business card companies like Moo or Vista Print don’t offer gift cards so you would need to let the grad design their own card and then pay.
  8. Stamps– Even though our world is so digital I never realized the importance of stamps until I was an adult. You need them for sending out important documents, thank you cards, your resume, cards and sometimes just random things. It’s always great to have some handy so it would be a great add on to any graduation gift.

Are you wanting to get a lady in your life something extra special? Well I’ve created a list of some lavish gifts I think any lady would love to get; I know I would.

Weekender Bag– Perfect for the lady who is always traveling somewhere because the wanderlust life is the life to have. A nice quality weekender bag would be perfect, and for a little extra something (and southern touch) add a monogram!

Kindle Fire– We live in a world of technology so having a tablet is great! Plus the new Kindle Fires come in some fun colors so you can gift a special lady a color that fits her personality. These are a great affordable alternative to an iPad because the quality is just as great. Kindles are great for traveling, work, school, leisure reading and entertainment.

Luxury Leather Bag– A good quality leather bag would make a great gift for any woman. When picking a leather bag go with simple features since the bag with last a lifetime (if cared for properly) so it also goes with all the changing styles. I picked out this bag from Michael Kors but you can find a quality leather bag everywhere from department stores to Etsy.

Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer– If you have a lady in your life who loves to cook, this mixer would be a perfect gift. The stand mixer has lots of adapters for pasta making or meat grinders; so it’s perfect for just about anyone!

Investing in higher quality means lasting much longer than typical costume jewelry. Check and see what your local jewelers have to offer for that special local touch.

Season Passes– A great gift is to give the gift of season passes or memberships. Generally good for a year so it’s the gift that keeps on giving. Give her something she will really enjoy and visit often. Plus it means something you the gifter can do with her. You can gift art museum memberships, amusement park season passes or local attractions.

Plan a Trip– Planning a trip is a very lavish gift but something she can look forward too. Take her to her favorite place or visit somewhere new.

Clarisonic– Every woman wants clean, healthy and glowing skin, and the best way to get that is with a clarisonic. This skincare tool will become an essential even though it is an investment. It comes in several different colors and Ulta generally has them on sale on Thanksgiving/Black Friday.

Gift Guide: For the Outdoor Lover

Gift Guide: For the Outdoor Lover

I love the outdoors now. I hated the outdoors prior. When I first started hanging out with Andrew, I told him I loved the outdoors because it was such a huge passion of his. Well he drug me out to outdoorsy things such as hiking and camping. And I have to admit I do kind of like it now. And all women can like the outdoors. So I picked some things I think any woman who loves the outdoors might like for different types of activites. Plus everything I have picked out is under $100.00!

Hammock– ENO hammocks have become pretty popular. I really like the idea of having one of these hammocks because you can take it hiking and find a spot to hang out, take it camping for something besides the typical fold out chairs, you can use it in your own back yard and it’s very portable which is perfect for traveling. Plus they come in a variety of colors so you can find one perfect for any personality.

Tent– A tent is a perfect gift for that lady who wants to go camping but just doesn’t have the right equipment. This is a great starter gift for someone starting to love to do outdoorsy things.

Hiking Back Pack– A hiking pack pack is something every women needs when going on longer hikes or camping trips. Perfect for carry snacks, water, a first aid kit, camera, phone and keys.

Dry Bag– A dry bag is a great gift for anyone who loves water sports. This will keep everything important dry. Nothing will spoil a day like dropping a phone in the water.

Vest– A vest is a really good gift for the lady in your life who likes to get outside even when the temps are dropping. This fleece lined vest is an affordable one from Old Navy and still warm, but if your lady lives in much colder climates or plans to travel somewhere where the weather is a factor nicer ones could be invested in.

Nalgene Water Bottle– A water bottle is a good investment for anyone. It can be used at any time, but especially important when outdoor activities are involved. I really like the Nalgene bottles because there are lines of the fluid ounces to help keep you hydrated plus these bottles are pretty indestructible.

Camp Socks-Camp socks are great to give to anyone. These are perfect for when the temperatures drop and any type of weather is a factor. These socks are very thick and generally a wool blend so they keep feet warm and dry. These are even great to use during the summer months because if you go camping in the mountains, it’s always a little chilly at night. And no one likes cold feet.

Beanie-Like with the socks this is great for cold weather outdoor fun. These are stylish and keep the head warm.

Chunky Snood-Like the socks and beanie this is great for cold weather outdoor fun. Very stylish and add some extra warmth. And great to take on summer camping trips when it gets a little extra chilly at night.

The items I listed are from chain stores but if you live in Asheville you can buy any of these items (or similar) locally. Living in WNC we have an abundance of outdoor stores. You can shop locally at Black Dome, Diamond Brand Outdoors and Frugal Backpacker whom is having their large sidewalk sale this weekend..

Gift Guide: For The Artist

Gift Guide: For The Artist

I am lucky to live somewhere where I am surrounded my artist and creative minds alike. They fuel my creativity and inspire me every day. I have created a gift guide fit for artists (also everything is under $40.00) that artist could actually use besides those awkward gift sets you can find at your local craft stores. These are things artists can actually use and as an artist these are things I would love to get as a gift. If all else fails you can always opt for a gift card to your local craft store or art supply store.

Brush Cleaner– Yes it is very easy to wash your brushes with soap and water and it is done a lot. But to preserve your brushes every once in a while an artist needs to deep clean their brushes so they last longer. I really like “The Masters” brand because it works well with all mediums for deep cleaning brushes.

Palette Knives– As an artist I think a good stock pile of palette knives is needed. These things are so easy to bend so grabbing a few for the artist in your life is always a good idea. Artist use these for both mixing paints, creating their own paints and even painting with. This is also a good idea if you have an artist who is wanting to experiment with different types of painting techniques. This whole set is under $7.00!

An Art Book– Artist like to enjoy other artists work, they like to display art. Why not get them a coffee table book specifically about the kind of art they like. I like modern art so this book would be perfect for myself. This is the kind of gift that would go great with a season pass to their favorite art gallery!

Pocket Journal– It’s important for artist to have an artistic outlet any time, anywhere. Where they can make quick sketches or jot down ideas they pull from their surroundings. An unlined drawing journal that can fit in their bag or pocket is perfect. If you think they have plenty lying around, they use them and sometimes can use them up fast. It’s always good to have an extra one and especially a smaller one.

Art Palette– Some palettes are a little more expensive, especially airtight ones. Not all artists are starving but they are normally on a budget, so splurging on something like this Martin Universal Airtight Peel-Off Palette might be out of the question. These are perfect for painting not just to hold your paint, but also if an artist is working on an in depth project this conserves paint. You can store your paint overnight or for days, you can mix a unique color and not have to continue trying to get it the same because you can save it. I had one very similar to this in college and loved it if I wasn’t getting a painting done in one sitting. Plus if you buy this from Michaels you can use a coupon!

Micron Pens– First, let me just rave about these pens. I love them! These pens are a little on the pricey side for pens but they are worth it. These pens are acid free and smudge proof so perfect for art. An artist can use these for signing pieces, doodling, drawing, mixed media; the options are just about endless for these pens!

Some other great gifts for artist that are very affordable could be good soap and lotion (since artist wash their hands a lot), drop cloths, iTunes gift cards or albums (artist generally like to have music playing while they are creating), gift cards to craft stores (Dick Blick, AC Moore, Michaels, etc.), membership to a local museum or gallery or a piece of art.
