How to Style That Summer Dress: What I Wore To Chattanooga

Dress // Cardigan // Sandals

This weather is seriously crazy y’all. One minute it’s really chilly all day and the next you get the mountain chill in the morning and evening but that late Summer heat during the day. Dressing for those days can be a bit complicated. But I love layers the most, so I’m trying different layers and putting them to the test.

I packed this little wrap dress for a weekend getaway for Chattanooga because I wanted to look pulled together and chic for a day at an art museum but comfortable and cool. But it was going to be chilly in the morning and generally art museums always have their AC cranked to the max. So this edgy little dress was the perfect thing to pair with a long cocoon shaped pumpkin colored cardigan I recently got. And the pairing was amazing. I popped on some of the most comfortable and funky sandals and a little dainty choker and I felt chic but yet comfortable for a day of walking.

To take a dress from the Summer to Fall all you have to do is add a fun cardigan to change the entire look of the outfit. Try different textures, lengths and colors for a perfect Fall outfit.

I just went to Chattanooga for the weekend and stayed at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. An old train station turned hotel was one of the most amazing stays ever. The room I stayed in was like a traditional hotel room, but the grounds were amazing. They even have train cars you can sleep in over night. An amazing spot with some equally creepy “The Shining” vibes. I went to see one of my favorite artists and fell in love with the city and the art museum. I have a feeling I will be going back very very soon.

Hilton Head Island Travel Diary: The iPhone Version

So if you aren’t following me on Instagram (which you should because sometimes it’s funny) you may not have known that I took a much needed vacation last week to Hilton Head Island. It’s one of my favorite places for a ton of different reasons. I love the atmosphere, the scenes, the fact that it is a quiet community and the food! So here are some of the highlights of my trip!

For the first time in almost four years we stayed on the South end of the island, right down the street from Coligny Beach. We were walking distance from food and shopping of any kind; and the most important, we were on beach front so we could easily walk to the beach at any given time during the day. It was so easy to have a relaxing vacation when everything was at your fingertips. Plus it didn’t hurt that according to the FitBit, we got well over 10,000 steps a day. Plus you could constantly hear the waves crashing which is the ultimate sound for relaxation.

Being so close to the beach and the fact that this was a much needed vacation was a no brainer that all day, every day I was at the beach. I loaded up on the SPF and literally chilled. The beach was quiet after Labor Day Weekend and even more quiet with the threat of a hurricane. But still I relaxed. And swam in the ocean. And played with sea creatures. I’ve got plenty of questions about this hat, the striped bathing suit and the kimono cover up; so they are all linked here!

Hat // Striped Bathing Suit // Kimono

Hilton Head Island is known for their world class golf courses and food. And well let’s just say I prefer food over the links. I have been waiting 5 whole years to try this place. They shut down for a week before Summer and it just so happens that’s always the week I visit. But it was worth the wait. Perfectly cooked cajun southern food. I had the etoufee and it was amazzzzzinggggg! If you visit Hilton Head, I suggest visiting Kenny B’s.

I found Java Burrito Company on Instagram and I am so glad that I did. It’s like a local Chipotle but for every meal and a full coffee bar inside. I had a breakfast bowl and iced dirty chai. Hands down one of the best decisions I made on that trip.

Ela’s is becoming a favorite on the island for me to visit. A little swanky, quiet, on the waterfront and the service and food is outstanding. We visiting the day before the evacuation was in order for Irma and they were still open. We had the place to ourselves and the service nor food suffered due to being understaffed or the island becoming a ghost town.

Marley’s Island Grill was a first for me, but not a last. Sooooooo good! A Caribbean take on local seafood. I got chorizo almond crusted scallops which may actually be one of the top 20 best meals of my life. So good.

There is just beauty and magic every where on the island. Maybe it’s because you are on vacation or island time. Whatever it is, it works. My soul feels a little more full after my visit there.

Happy Travels!

Farewell To Summer But Not This Dress

I just got back from a much needed vacation in one of my favorite spots! (I’ll be haring a travel diary on Wednesday about where I went and what I did if you don’t follow me on Instagram.)

But I packed basics for this trip, nothing special because my only real plan was to truly relax on the beach for the majority of the time. I did pack this black dress that makes me feel like Adele and this little bomber both from Nest Boutique and DIY studio, and they were the perfect pairing for some waterfront dining one night at a swanky little place. And so easy to wear. Which is the key for vacation.

Now that Summer is unofficially over, I came back to Asheville and it really felt like Fall y’all; I am starting to put away my shorts, tanks and off the shoulder tops. But this dress is not going away yet. Neither is this bomber despite the bright colors. This dress will be great with tights and heels plus a fur coat for chillier days and it’s the perfect little dress for Holiday get togethers and festive holiday outings. Plus I also think this dress would be perfect for a few Halloween costumes I have up my sleeves (because store bought costumes are just gross).

So I challenge you while you are packing away your Spring/Summer goodies to see what will carry itself in to the colder months and holiday season. Not only is it fun to try to think of new ways to style something but your wallet will really thank you.

I hope you all had a great unofficial end to Summer and now the basic bia inside of me is ready to live for the Fall fashion, weather and activities. Make sure you are following along to stay up to date.

Seasons Are Changing

It’s still Summer until the 22nd of September and I am currently at the beach for a little late Summer getaway, but I can’t help but to think; the most wonderful and my favorite time of year is approaching. I hear people talking about how they hate Fall/Winter all the time, but I love it. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good beach vacation and I am a water baby at heart whether it be lakes, rivers or the sea; I also love the longer amount of light and the fact that the fireflies come out. But Fall/Winter has my heart.

In the middle of the endless Summer heat, I always think I’ll never be able to wrap up in sweaters and scarfs and drink a latte without dying of heat exhaustion; but like clockwork the seasons always seem to change.

There’s something about waking up before the sun to catch a glimpse of the chilly fog lifting over the mountains. Wrapping up in blankets, lighting a candle and feeling like the warmest thing around you. And feeling at home. There’s something about seeing all the trees go through a colorful change, knowing they will be whole again after the change.

I love all the closeness that Fall/Winter brings. Coffee dates with your friends in matching basic warmness. Breaking out the flannels. Movie nights. More at home dinner cooking. Being close to those you really care about while the chilly air whips around you.

I love the childlike activities that take place. Making you feel young and alive. Apple Orchards. The fair. Camping. Carving pumpkins.

Another thing that makes Fall/Winter the absolute best: The Holidays! It stresses some out; some hate it because they work retail. I love it though. I mean we have three holidays based around delicious food and being cozy. Count me in.

And don’t even get me started on the “s” word everyone hates. Yes! I love the snow. It’s so magical and unaltered and innocent. It is what you make out of it. And I love the childlike wonder that it brings out in so many people.

Traveling #OOTD

There is still time to get some last minute Summer traveling in, but I personally prefer to travel in the Fall. And it’s probably because I live in a tourist town where everyone flocks to it during the Fall time. Those beautiful leaves y’all! So I’m off to the beach for a week, vacay started Saturday and I have several other travel plans for the Fall (and escaping all those leaf lookers). And the weather is cooling off and let’s be real; I like to have the car feeling like Antarctica when I’m traveling even if I need to wrap up in something cozy due to it. So this look is perfect from going from somewhere chillier (or even traveling to somewhere chillier) to somewhere warmer. And it’s perfect for going from the car ride or flight to going straight to getting your vacation on.

I’ve said it before and million times over, but a t-shirt dress is the answer to all your styling problems. It’s simple, versatile and most of the times you can find them for extremely affordable prices. Plus it can carry you from season to season, or from somewhere chillier to warmer. I love this striped one I got at Target in the early Spring. It’s striped (duh), the perfect weight, comfy as all get out and can be worn super casual or dressed up. Plus it doesn’t get wrinkled as easy even after being in the car (or plane) for hours.

I paired it with a light weight cardigan for temperature changes and to just be comfy in the car. Plus if I get to hot, this cardigan will make a great pillow. Versatile pieces guys! With comfort being key, I paired this with some Converse shoes. It has a whole beachy casual vibe to it, but when I get to the island, if I need to make a quick change I can easily throw on some sandals and be ready to go.

Let’s not forget the big bag. Easy to carry all the important things like a phone charger, reading material, road trip snacks and anything I may want to change in to if I’m not heading to the villa first.

Ready to go! Make sure you all are following along on Instagram as I will really be documenting this much anticipated and much needed vacation.

My Favorite Fall Outfits, Year After Year

FALL IS COMING!!!!! But no seriously y’all, it’s my favorite time of year for fashion. It’s getting cooler here in the mountains and Fall clothing is on the racks of just about everywhere. So I thought I would share my Fall uniform for you guys. Maybe to try to look at things differently in your closet and get more use out of some items or to think about a few things you are going to add to your shopping cart.

My basic b***h outfit is one I’m in more than anything. Jeans, booties, oversized tee, cardigan and a hat. Though it may be basic, it just works. It’s perfect for work, errands, wearing around the house and even date night. I love wearing this outfit in neutrals so it is capable of working for anything. A simple tee, nothing graphic and nothing with a crazy print. And a simple cardigan, the bigger the better; avoiding details and prints. Even if I’m having a good hair day, I think in the Fall I could live in hats if you let me. Investing in one good hat, can seriously be a life changer. I love this one and this one. And the same goes for investing in a good pair of booties. I bought these last year, paid a little more for them and they are still holding up great. I actually think I’m just now getting them broken in. But I’m also really really loving these (maybe not the price tag though).

So how basic will you be this Fall?

Another favorite Fall outfit is taking simple pieces and possibly even past season pieces and layering to make them work for the new season. This is actually a t-shirt dress and a button up dress. Neither would be able to be worn on their own due to the temps so pairing together for a funky layer is a great idea. This is also a great way to maximize your clothing that you currently have. Just trying pairing things with each other, even if it is unexpected. I kept a flow with this by pairing two similar patterns together. So always think of that. But hey, floral and stripes go together just as polka dots and stripes go together. Just all what you are comfortable with.

Finish it off with the perfect look for Fall with leggings or tights, boots or booties and girlfriend you are ready to rock that #ootd!

P.S. There is a blog post all about how you can directly help all those affected by Hurricane Harvey HERE. Also I did a collab with Rachel Weisberg on two scarves where 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Buy something handmade, look stylish and help our neighbors in need. You can shop the “Houston Love” Long Scarf or Square Scarf HERE. You can also check out our blog collab and why we are doing this HERE.

P.S.S. I am heading somewhere exciting (actually it may not be that exciting because Hurricane season) so make sure you are following me on INSTAGRAM because I will be taking you all with me for the fun!

Hurricane Harvey Relief

IMAGE

Hurricane Harvey has already dumped more than 15 trillion gallons of water on to the region, forcing thousands from their homes, displacing many and costing an ungodly amount of structural damage. FEMA has called this disaster  a “landmark event” that will take years for Houston to recover from. And with the threat of more rain to eventually fall in the area in the coming days, the situation will only worsen.

I personally think the most stylish attribute is a giving heart; so if you are like me and saddened by the articles, interviews, images and coverage of this natural disaster, I wanted to share ways to give back either near or far. Our Texans are in need of all of our help y’all.

HOW TO HELP FROM AFAR

Houston Humane Society

United Way of Greater Houston

Texas Diaper Bank

L.G.B.T.Q Disaster Relief Fund

American Red Cross

HOW TO HELP IN TEXAS

Any of the above charities can be donated to from anywhere. If you are traveling to Texas or live in Texas and are physically assisting, please be safe. The Sheriff of Houston actually made a call for anyone with boats or high/rough terrain vehicles to assist in the process of search and rescue.

There is a serious need of blood donations. South Texas Blood and Tissue Center and Carter BloodCare are in crucial need and desperately asking for locals to come and give.

The Houston Food Bank is currently accepting any donations of non-perishable items

HOW TO HELP IN ASHEVILLE

Hearts With Hands– Bring any new, unopened non-perishable food items, toiletries, clothing, household items or water. There is also the option to donate money as well if you can not make it to the warehouse for physical donations.

Crossfire Diesel Alliance is setting up a truck at the Tastee Freeze September 1st at 7:30pm for donations. Unlike Hearts with Hands you can donate gently used clothing and blankets along with non-perishable items.

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue is also accepting donations.

Though not stated it would be a good time to donate to your local food bank. I highly expect them or Ingles to make a donation to the relief efforts.

New Belgium Brewing Asheville is donating all tips from August 31st until September 15th to relief efforts.

I will keep this section updated for all my local peeps as I come across information for this.

It is horrible that people would try to scam others during such a trying time in our country. But there are still shitty people out there every day. To protect you, your wallet and your efforts, I have spent the past 36 hours doing extensive research on reputable charities and donation centers. The ones that I have listed above have been supported by Charity Navigator (which is an awesome tool to see if a charity you are considering is legit or not). And I would never post anything that I do not fully support and stand behind. If you are still wondering if where you are donating to may be a scam, or you just want to really make sure before you donate; feel free to check out this article about how to protect yourself from a potential scam.

Although our leader of our country may try to rip us all apart, I have witnessed people of all different backgrounds scrambling to help each other. Though tragic, we are all in this together.

Love to you all!

Party Dress

Dress // Shoes

I bought this dress specifically for going out for my birthday. It seemed like the perfect choice. The print was of course just my style but the shape is what drew me in. Low cut, which I’m loving lately and a wrap, another feature I’m loving lately. The shape is great. From the wrapped bottom to the flutter sleeves it seemed like the perfect dress for some dancing.

Mind you I did not actually get to go dancing minus the few shimmies I made on the way to the car, but it was also the perfect dress for a nice night out. Whatever I was doing.

This dress would be perfect for those last of Summer get togethers or even just patio dining before it gets too cold. But even if cold, I think this dress will make it’s way out of the closet again for some holiday parties paired with some tights and a leather jacket.

Currently Craving: Fall Wish List

Dress

Ever since I have discovered the designer YANA K, I have been obsessed. And dying to have a piece in my closet. Luckily a local boutique carries the designs, but just lacking the color I’m looking for; black go figure. And when this babe was added to the new collection, I’ve been smitten. It is a bit pricey, but I’m really starting to focus on quality over quantity. Handmade in the U.S.A and from a smaller business. Just let me add this to my shopping cart and then my closet, mmmkay!

Boots

These boots are giving me all the heart eyes! And from a reliable company, made to stand the test of time. I really want a boot that is going to go with everything whether it be jeans or a dress and of course not fall apart after a few wears (damn you $40.00 boots). How cute would these boots be with the above dress?!? I mean come on.

Necklace

I posted Wednesday about my love for layering necklaces. And I’m wanting something dainty but oversized, plus a little more personal. This coin necklace is just the ticket. You can get anything engraved on it, it comes it different sizes and lengths as well as two different metals. Pretty perfect for achieving that Stevie Nicks look.

Work Out Gear

Shoes

I’m really wanting to get some new work out gear including leggings and shoes. Perfect for hiking, yoga classes and barre (that I’m just getting in to). Or ya know that whole athleisure trend of running errands in work out gear.

The Art of Layering Necklaces

Gone are the days of insane statement necklaces worn on a daily basis. Something a little like this and who can forget those bauble necklaces that everyone who was anyone had to wear. I still see a ton of people wearing these still, but for me, my style has elevated and so has my accessory game. Give me all the dainty necklaces to layer. At this point I’m actually just wanting to throw on as many necklaces as possible and just see where it goes. Very groovy, 70’s and boho chic inspired. Don’t get me wrong, a good statement piece is still necessary sometimes, especially for the holidays, like this necklace.

I love the idea of layering dainty pieces together to elevate simple outfits, like jeans and a t-shirt. Or even toning down a crazy print where a statement necklace might seem overpowering, but then you feel a little naked if you aren’t wearing some jewelry. Also who else is in to the super low cuts right now? Layering necklaces adds a great chic aspect to those cuts. But finding the perfect minimalist pieces to layer and how to go about it can seem a little daunting. I’m here to tell you there is absolutely no wrong way to do this! And that’s why this is so perfect, but here are a few tricks I use to have a pulled together layered look.

The only huge “rule” or tip I have is to start small. Start with your choker length (14 inches to 16 inches) before going to your longer pieces. Personally it helps figure out the “vibe” of the layer I’m going with. Also when shopping for layering pieces, especially your choker length, look for extra dainty pieces that also have an extender. This helps you get more use out of each piece.

Then start adding your other necklaces that are longer. Don’t be afraid to mix metals; it helps give it a more boho and effortlessly chic feel to it. Also add in sentimental pieces or personal pieces (break out those monograms if you wish) with regular necklaces. This diamond necklace wouldn’t traditionally be thought to be paired with a cheaper boutique find but it works in a layered look.

The layering doesn’t have to be all close to your neck with shorter necklaces. Add some long necklaces too. And don’t be afraid to add something with some texture!

Feel free to add a funky necklace with dainty pieces. This isn’t a crazy statement necklace so it works with layering with more minimalist pieces.

See there are absolutely no rules. Fringe on fringe on choker. I started small with this look and added a little bigger statement, then a larger statement. But all simple in itself.

Pull a neck scarf in to the mix for part of the layering. It’s a fun way to add texture and something totally different.

And if you want to try this trend but aren’t wanting to invest in a ton of smaller necklaces or not sure if this is your vibe; try a necklace that is pre-layered for you. It takes all the guess work out for you and is often time a little more affordable for trying this out. This necklace and this necklace would make great starter pieces.

SHOPPING TIPS

I love finding pieces at boutiques because generally they are going to be extremely unique. And price ranges from $20.00 to $50.00 typically. Some may be more depending on the materials. But you can find simple affordable pieces at places like Forever 21 and H&M.

Invest in an extender. You can find them for very cheap at craft stores or you can order gold and silver ones at a number of jewelry stores and online.

Check out Instagram for a bunch of indie shops for fun and unique pieces. Especially a plus if you don’t have a great boutique selection in your area.

If you find a piece you like and want to see if you will like it layered. Just start layering it in store with others. Sometimes you got to test drive the vehicle before you buy it!

Hope you all have fun layering your necklaces!
