The Art of Layering Necklaces

Gone are the days of insane statement necklaces worn on a daily basis. Something a little like this and who can forget those bauble necklaces that everyone who was anyone had to wear. I still see a ton of people wearing these still, but for me, my style has elevated and so has my accessory game. Give me all the dainty necklaces to layer. At this point I’m actually just wanting to throw on as many necklaces as possible and just see where it goes. Very groovy, 70’s and boho chic inspired. Don’t get me wrong, a good statement piece is still necessary sometimes, especially for the holidays, like this necklace.

I love the idea of layering dainty pieces together to elevate simple outfits, like jeans and a t-shirt. Or even toning down a crazy print where a statement necklace might seem overpowering, but then you feel a little naked if you aren’t wearing some jewelry. Also who else is in to the super low cuts right now? Layering necklaces adds a great chic aspect to those cuts. But finding the perfect minimalist pieces to layer and how to go about it can seem a little daunting. I’m here to tell you there is absolutely no wrong way to do this! And that’s why this is so perfect, but here are a few tricks I use to have a pulled together layered look.

The only huge “rule” or tip I have is to start small. Start with your choker length (14 inches to 16 inches) before going to your longer pieces. Personally it helps figure out the “vibe” of the layer I’m going with. Also when shopping for layering pieces, especially your choker length, look for extra dainty pieces that also have an extender. This helps you get more use out of each piece.

Then start adding your other necklaces that are longer. Don’t be afraid to mix metals; it helps give it a more boho and effortlessly chic feel to it. Also add in sentimental pieces or personal pieces (break out those monograms if you wish) with regular necklaces. This diamond necklace wouldn’t traditionally be thought to be paired with a cheaper boutique find but it works in a layered look.

The layering doesn’t have to be all close to your neck with shorter necklaces. Add some long necklaces too. And don’t be afraid to add something with some texture!

Feel free to add a funky necklace with dainty pieces. This isn’t a crazy statement necklace so it works with layering with more minimalist pieces.

See there are absolutely no rules. Fringe on fringe on choker. I started small with this look and added a little bigger statement, then a larger statement. But all simple in itself.

Pull a neck scarf in to the mix for part of the layering. It’s a fun way to add texture and something totally different.

And if you want to try this trend but aren’t wanting to invest in a ton of smaller necklaces or not sure if this is your vibe; try a necklace that is pre-layered for you. It takes all the guess work out for you and is often time a little more affordable for trying this out. This necklace and this necklace would make great starter pieces.

SHOPPING TIPS

I love finding pieces at boutiques because generally they are going to be extremely unique. And price ranges from $20.00 to $50.00 typically. Some may be more depending on the materials. But you can find simple affordable pieces at places like Forever 21 and H&M.

Invest in an extender. You can find them for very cheap at craft stores or you can order gold and silver ones at a number of jewelry stores and online.

Check out Instagram for a bunch of indie shops for fun and unique pieces. Especially a plus if you don’t have a great boutique selection in your area.

If you find a piece you like and want to see if you will like it layered. Just start layering it in store with others. Sometimes you got to test drive the vehicle before you buy it!

Hope you all have fun layering your necklaces!
